the place i bought my car from was a pretty decent place (nice people, nice cars easy process) but I feel like it could lose that ‘used car lot’ feel if it upgraded its facades. It only took me like an hour to get to this point which is basically the box of the building and the doors/windows.

I thought of doing a quick render and sending it to them. Worst case scenario they say ‘um ok thanks bye’ or they say yea lets do that and I get a job out of it.

Their site says they have 266 cars in inventory including this thing:

and their building looks like this

, I think that roof is more or less decorative and could probably just pull off. I thought just by taking that off and adding a new facade material, the building would jump so far in street appeal. Another idea is to add some sort of canopy would be nice too. It would be kinda cool when you take the car home its waiting under a glass canopy.

I find the fancier the dealer, the worse the experience is (luxury brands excepted). The more old the dealer looks, the better the experience. I looked at 2007 grand Cherokee hemi at a dealer, it was on the corner of strip mall. No dealer has been as good as that one.

I like the building, though it is far from my favorite in the genre. The plaza in front has always seemed oppressively barren to me though. It’s supposed to evoke Piazza del Campo in Siena, but that’s a smaller space, lined with cafes and shops, and anchored by a major tourist attraction, while Boston’s plaza is just a dead space surrounded by offices. There’s no reason for anyone to go there.

Any sketches of your vision? I’m legitimately interested.

The MB dealer my Ex worked at in the Chicago suburbs was amazing. Designed in the 70s with tall windows and a reflecting pond in front. It was just amazing. Was.. A sellout to Autonation and MB corporate made them change. Now it looks like every other cookie cutter car store.

i got a chance to tour it and talk to some of the people who work in there. As an office its horrible, but the design is crazy.

Have you gotten to tour the Art and Architecture Building at Yale? Paul Rudolph was the master of Brutalist Architecture.

I think there’s something like 30 levels in 7 stories, it’s wonderfully sectionally complex. Also, orange carpet.

One of our projects in 3rd year was a student dorm... Everyone was doing developer glass-and-steel buildings but my partner and I made a brutalist monstrosity. It’s still my favorite project I’ve done.

yea i went back and re-added a bunch. Kinja at its finest. That is just the basic box with all the windows, basically if you stripped all the finishes off the outside. That would be my starting point for the new design.
